We harvested Hunge apple over the last couple of weeks, and I had overlooked it before as the tiny tree was overgrown by its neighbors. It was exceptional, with a crisp, tender juicy flesh that had a sweet/tart, winey taste with some interesting complexity. This is a traditional apple for the warmer areas of the South that originated in the 1700’s but was almost lost to cultivation if it wasn’t for a single tree grafted in the 40’s that someone remembered. The photo above is from a client in Zambia where it fruited the second year, and he said it was really good. They do not keep well and are best for fresh eating, pies, cider, and killer applesauce.
