The Florida Prince peach is on the tail end of blossoming, with Earligrande and Eva’s Pride peaches right behind. The weather is much nicer than last year and so the tree was humming with bees as I was doing some belated pruning on it. We have three early peach varieties that should be attracting pollinators for what is the main event to us, our Minnie Royal and Royal Lee cherries, which absolutely need to cross-pollinate or we’ll get squat. I’m hoping this flurry of pollination will stick around for the Royal Ann and Lapins to cross-pollinate, as both expode in blossoms that dry up and fall off to reveal one or two cherries. The Southern Highbush blueberries are waking up though and we’re trying a few more varieties this year.

Stay tuned for the Anna and Dorsett Golden apple blossoms, which are warming up for a symphony of color.

You may recall last spring that a group in Uganda decided they could do their own apple grafting, and so I sent just the rootstocks and scionwood to them, along with some elementary grafting tools and an instructional video. Well they got right down to it, and grafted about 1,000 trees in short order and in the process became the most experienced apple grafters in Kampala!

Well they must have done something right, as the above tree was grafted by them only nine months ago, and now is showing excellent form. I counseled John Baptist here to prune off the branch in his left hand to allow the other one to become the central leader, but otherwise the tree is perfect and may start bearing onsie-twosies next year. This is in the Lira district of central Uganda, and the climate description from the Lira webside is as follows:

“The continental climate of the district is modified by the large swamp area surrounding the southern part of the district. The rainfall in the district is bimodal with one peak during April-May and the other in August-October.
The average annual rainfall in the district varies between 1200-1600 mm (47-62″) decreasing northwards. The rainfall is mainly convectional and normally comes in the afternoons and evenings.
The average minimum and maximum temperatures are 22.5 C (72 F) and 25.5 C (78 F), respectively. Absolute maximum temperature hardly goes beyond 36 C (97 F), and absolute minimum hardly falls below 20 C (68 F).
The Equatorial Trough which brings rainfall passes over the district. The South easterly winds which also brings rains to the district passes over Lira. Land and sea breezes are common in the district. Wind run is low (1-4m/sec) during the rainy season and moderate (4-8m/sec) during the dry season.”

As you can see by the bananas, maize, and sweet potatoes in the background, this isn’t exactly tradional apple country; it receives zero chilling hours. But apples will grow and fruit here, despite all the literature saying this can’t happen. We’ll be sure to be sending updates as they harvest.

I picked the last Lady Williams apple today, a few weeks earlier than last year (it was good; juicy, with a nice tart/sweet combination, definately on the tart side). And of course, the first blossoms on Dorsett Golden today caught me by surprise, as it always does and then I start scrambling to check other trees in town to see if they’re still dormant enough for me to cut scionwood off of them.

Checking my logs the Dorsett Golden blossom is right on time, which means Anna is due in a day or two also and I also need to cut that scionwood. I don’t know why this catches me off guard every year, maybe because I get caught up in “dormant period” tasks when we really don’t have a dormant period. I don’t envy the ice, snow, and misery of my northern fellow growers, but I do envy the true “down time’ they enjoy when they can retire to the barn and sharpen and maintain equipment, look at catalogs, and generally plan the new year while the orchard sleeps under a blanket of snow and then wakes up all at once in an orderly fashion in late April. Here the bloom lasts 5 months and I’ll be fighting earwigs and codling moth the whole time.

But I will admit the weather this week has been glorious, around 80 every day for the high and in the mid-50′s at night with a nice breeze to cool you off around noon under a deep blue sky and snow-capped mountains in the distance. The citrus is starting to ripen and so I’ll feature a couple of oranges in the next few days.

I bought a bag of the most horrible Honeycrisp apples from Trader Joes this week. They were very green (unripe), bland, tasteless, with not even a hint of sweetness. I had hoped that they were just shaded during the season and didn’t get much color, but were still sweet and juicy inside. Nope, they were just picked way too early and marketed anywaywith this lousy quality.

This just adds justification to breeders who want to protect their brand with strictly-controlled co-ops, who can dictate quality standards for any of their brand that reaches market. If I had not known much better, I would have determined from this bag that Honeycrisp is a horrible apple, and that I prefer sweeter apples like Pink Lady instead. Now Pink Lady is the trademark name for Cripp’s Pink apples that are grown to the standards set by the Pink Lady marketing association, and usually consumers will get a good taste experience, something not guaranteed by the expired-patent, non-trademarked Honeycrisp.

For that matter, it really lowers the bar on how good my homegrown apples have to be to beat the taste of supermarket apples. But no worries there, the Honeycrisp we grow here in the heat are outstanding and are on par with even the best of what I’ve tasted in the store or even local mountain U-pick orchards, and we’re testing them in Africa also.

The “blockish” shape on the apples is typical, as is the pink blush on the sunny side. These trees are quite happy here and will get pretty big, producing a crop of apples and a crop of scionwood for propagating new trees every year. They will also adapt to the tropic climate and have less “blind wood” (branches without leaves) in future years.

“After this interview [with Herod] the wise men went their way. And the star they had seen in the east guided them to Bethlehem. It went ahead of them and stopped over the place where the child was. When they saw the star, they were filled with joy! They entered the house and saw the child with his mother, Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him. Then they opened their treasure chests and gave him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. (Matthew 2: 9-12)

Notice they entered a house and saw a child; the Greek intones a small child, or toddler. This was not the baby in a manger wrapped in swaddling clothes, but a year or two later. Just when Mary and Joseph may have started to think life was returning to normal, these prestigious men enter the house and fall on their face worshipping Jesus. They presented him:

Gold; the gift presented to kings, denoting Jesus’ royalty.

Frankincense; this was burned before the Lord in the Holy of Holies in the Temple, denoting Jesus’ priesthood

Myrrh; probably the strangest of all, it was used for embalming dead bodies, signifying the reason Jesus came- He came to die.

“When it was time to leave, they returned to their own country by another route, for God had warned them in a dream not to return to Herod.

After the wise men were gone, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream. “Get up! Flee to Egypt with the child and his mother,” the angel said. “Stay there until I tell you to return, because Herod is going to search for the child to kill him.”

That night Joseph left for Egypt with the child and Mary, his mother, and they stayed there until Herod’s death. This fulfilled what the Lord had spoken through the prophet: “I called my Son out of Egypt. (Hosea 11:1) [No one had to tell Joseph twice to look out for Herod; his reputation for brutality and paranoia about his throne were well-known- ed.]

Herod was furious when he realized that the wise men had outwitted him. He sent soldiers to kill all the boys in and around Bethlehem who were two years old and under, based on the wise men’s report of the star’s first appearance. Herod’s brutal action fulfilled what God had spoken through the prophet Jeremiah:

“A cry was heard in Ramah—
weeping and great mourning.
Rachel weeps for her children,
refusing to be comforted,
for they are dead.”[Jeremiah 31:15] “ Matthew 2:13-18

By the time of his death, Herod also had killed many Pharisees, his mother-in-law, brother-in-law, his wife Miriam and three of his sons whom he suspected in plots against his throne; he considered himself Jewish and kept kosher dietary laws, leading Caesar Augustus to remark “Its safer to be Herod’s pig than to be his son”.

“When Herod died, an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph inEgypt. “Get up!” the angel said. “Take the child and his mother back to the land of Israel, because those who were trying to kill the child are dead.”

So Joseph got up and returned to the land of Israel with Jesus and his mother. But when he learned that the new ruler of Judea was Herod’s son Archelaus, he was afraid to go there. Then, after being warned in a dream, he left for the region of Galilee. So the family went and lived in a town called Nazareth. This fulfilled what the prophets had said: “He will be called a Nazarene.” (Matthew 2:9-23)”

Herod was already seriously ill by this time, so Joseph and Mary’s time in Egypt was not long, maybe only a couple months. They returned to Mary’s home town, Nazareth, where Jesus would grow up in obscurity living the common life of a peasant in 1st century Roman-occupied land of Israel.

Last we left Mary and Joseph, they had left the Temple in Jerusalem to go back to Nazareth in Galilee. However, something brought them back to Bethlehem again between the 40 days of purification and 4 A.D. when Herod the Great dies. This is not unusual, as Matthew already records that Mary and Joseph traveled to Jerusalem every year for Passover, and the law required all males to appear yearly at the temple for two other feasts, the feast of Penticost (first fruits) and the feast of Tabernacles . Plus, Joseph was in construction, and speaking from personal experience, in construction you’re always working yourself out of a job and on the lookout for work; perhaps while in Bethlehem for registration a family member offered Joseph some work. And even if they were there for a feast in Jerusalem, it’s perfectly conceivable that they’d stay with relatives in Bethlehem(who might still be embarrassed that they ended up in the barn their last visit and wanted to make it up to them, as Joseph’s new wife is simply adorable).

Meanwhile over in Jerusalem, pandemonium is about to break loose. Some men are waiting for Herod in his court; distinguished visitors from the East. The Bible calls them “Magi” (possibly Royal Astronomers/Astrologers), and somehow they were expecting the Messiah and knew He had been born. How this happened we’re not entirely sure, but we do know that when the Jews returned from exile in Babylon (which was part of the Persian Empire by then) not all of them left; indeed, Nehemiah was a high official in the court of Artaxerxes and was required to return there after assisting the rebuilding of Jerusalem. Thus the knowledge of Hebrew Scriptures including the messianic prophecies of Isaiah, Jeremiah, and Daniel would have been known there. Later on we’ll see that God appears in a dream to the Magi to warn them, and so it could also be he appeared in a dream previously to tell them to follow a star.

And so it is, these men (we don’t know how many) are standing in Herod’s court, asking him “Where is He who is born King of the Jews? For we have seen His star in the east, and have come to worship Him”. Now this was the absolute last thing Herod wanted to hear in so many ways. HE was the King of the Jews, and could only dream of having his own star and distinguished men wanting to worship him (most of his own subjects wanted him dead). The Bible says King Herod was deeply disturbed, and all Jerusalem with him. There’s a good reason for this; if Herod aint happy, aint nobody happy, as heads usually roll when Herod ain’t happy. The shepherd’s report may have suddenly come to mind also, ringing alarm bells. But this shrewd, paranoid king kept his cool long enough to call a meeting of the chief priests and scribes, and nonchalantly ask them “so, where is the messiah to be born?” Without missing a beat, they replied “In Bethlehem of Judea, for this is what the prophet wrote; “And you, O Bethlehem in the land of Judah, are not least among the ruling cities of Judah, for a ruler will come for you who will be the shepherd for my people Israel’” (Micah 5:2). Now how the Chief Priests could stand there and not even investigate what was only five miles from them in Bethlehem I could only speculate. Maybe they were afraid of what Herod would think or maybe they didn’t believe it. But the Magi believed it, as they traveled hundreds of miles to see Him. And Herod certainly believed it, as we’ll see shortly.

He meets secretly the Magi and sends them off to Bethlehem, with the instructions to search for the child, and when they find him, to come back and tell him, “so he can come worship him too”. How he kept a straight face while saying that last line, I’ll never know.

-to be continued

“Eight days later, when the baby was circumcised, he was named Jesus, the name given him by the angel even before he was conceived.

Then it was time for their purification offering, as required by the Law of Moses after the birth of a child [40 days later -ed.]; so his parents took him to Jerusalemto present him to the Lord. The law of the Lord says, “If a woman’s first child is a boy, he must be dedicated to the Lord.” So they offered the sacrifice required in the law of the Lord—“either a pair of turtledoves or two young pigeons.” [The law actually called for a lamb, but if the woman could not afford that, the birds were an allowed substitute, which demonstrated Joseph and Mary's poverty-ed.]

At that time there was a man in Jerusalem named Simeon. He was righteous and devout and was eagerly waiting for the Messiah to come and rescue Israel. The Holy Spirit was upon him and had revealed to him that he would not die until he had seen the Lord’s Messiah. That day the Spirit led him to the Temple. So when Mary and Joseph came to present the baby Jesus to the Lord as the law required, Simeon was there. He took the child in his arms and praised God, saying,

“Sovereign Lord, now let your servant die in peace,
as you have promised.
I have seen your salvation,
which you have prepared for all people.
He is a light to reveal God to the nations,
and he is the glory of your people Israel!”

Jesus’ parents were amazed at what was being said about him. Then Simeon blessed them, and he said to Mary, the baby’s mother, “This child is destined to cause many in Israel to fall, but he will be a joy to many others. He has been sent as a sign from God, but many will oppose him. As a result, the deepest thoughts of many hearts will be revealed. And a sword will pierce your very soul.” [He didn't say this to Joseph, who would be dead by the time Jesus started His public ministry -ed.]

Anna, a prophet, was also there in the Temple. She was the daughter of Phanuel from the tribe of Asher, and she was very old. Her husband died when they had been married only seven years. Then she lived as a widow to the age of eighty-four. She never left the Temple but stayed there day and night, worshiping God with fasting and prayer. She came along just as Simeon was talking with Mary and Joseph, and she began praising God. She talked about the child to everyone who had been waiting expectantly for God to rescue Jerusalem.

When Jesus’ parents had fulfilled all the requirements of the law of the Lord, they returned home to Nazareth in Galilee. There the child grew up healthy and strong. He was filled with wisdom, and God’s favor was on him.” (Luke 2:21-39)

-to be continued

About 5 miles south of Jerusalem is the town of Bethlehem where King David was born and raised, and thus also known as the City of David (not to be confused with the area of Jerusalem immediately south of the Temple Mount which became his capitol, also known as the City of David). The name means “House of Bread”, possibly because of all the wheat grown in the region. Archeologists estimate the population at the time of Jesus to be about 5,000, not exactly a town set up to receive a lot of visitors.

This was Joseph’s ancestral home and upon arrival he and Mary probably sought refuge with extended family members. However because of the registration decreed by Augustus and the requirement by Herod that decedents of David had to report to Bethlehem, it was probably packed and the usual guest rooms were filled. Despite tradition nowhere in the Bible does it say that Jesus was born in a stable (although it very well could have been), only that he was placed in a manger, a stone feeding trough conveniently just about the right size and height for a crib. The King James Bible says that this was because there was no room at the “inn”, but the Greek word used in this case for “inn” is “kataluma”, literally “loosing down place”, which is quite open to interpretation. This presents several options; it could have been a guest room upstairs at a private residence, or a corner of the house set aside for guests. What it is not is the “inn” referred to that the Good Samaritan deposited the wounded Jewish man at and paid the innkeeper to take care of him; the Greek word for this type of inn was pandoxeion.

Some suggest that given what we know about the betrothal process, many relatives would be present that would know that the wedding feast had not taken place yet between Mary and Joseph, and yet here she is full-term pregnant. The scandal of adultery and the defilement it entails may have caused them to shut their doors and refuse their kataluma to them, until some kind-hearted soul took pity on them and at least let them use the stable, which may indeed been the downstairs of the house, not some outlying cave. Or it may be that even if they were warmly received, Mary and Joseph didn’t feel like displacing the 2 or 3 families that were already stuffed into the kataluma, and at their own admonition moved out to the stable, where there would be at least a semblance of peace and quiet. But then again, it may have indeed been a cave, as the hills around Bethlehem are still dotted with them. I’ve spent nights in a unheated stone house before, and can assure you it’s not much better than a cave.

God kept the birth of His Son relatively quiet and low-key, but there was a group of angels that were just chomping at the bit to celebrate and tell someone, so God sent them to a group of shepherds who were most likely tending the sheep by nignt used for the Temple sacrifices. Shepherds were pretty low on the social ladder, considered by the general population as untrustworthy, and their profession made them ceremonially unclean, which was a big deal in these times. Yet God looked on their hearts as those who Jesus came to save, and they showed the nobleness of their hearts in believing the angel’s message, rejoicing to hear it, and running to Bethlehem to worship the newborn King. Isaiah the prophet foretold this event 700 years before when he wrote “For unto us a child is born, unto us a Son is given: and the government shall be upon His shoulder. And His name shall be called Wonderful, Counselor, the mighty God, The Everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace. Of the increase of His government and peace there shall be no end, upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to order it, and to establish it with judgment and with justice from henceforth even for ever. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will perform this. (Isaiah 9:6-7)

After the shepherds left, they went and told everyone who would listen what they had seen and heard, and gave glory to God. Mary marveled at the things the shepherds said, and often pondered these things in her heart. News of this probably reached the chief priests and Herod in Jerusalem, who with them being shepherds and all, probably didn’t pay much heed to it. An event would happen in a while however that would attract Herod’s complete and undivided attention…

-To be continued

Terraced vineyard and orchards in Nazareth

Nazarethwas the home town of Mary and Joseph, and the boyhood home of Jesus. Today it is the largest city in Galilee and nicknamed the Arab Capitol of Israel, due to its population of 72,000 mostly Arabs in the city proper and thousands more in the outlying region.

But back in Jesus’ day most archeological evidence shows it to have been a tiny hamlet, never having more than 500 people. There’s not much information available about it before Jesus’ day; in fact, other than being Jesus’ boyhood town it is remarkable for being quite unremarkable. It rests in a bowl of terraced hillsides that supported olive trees, almonds, vineyards, barley, and sheep. It’s about 20 miles from Tiberias and the Sea of Galilee, but not really on the way to anywhere. Basically it was a Podunk town in the middle of nowhere. When one of Jesus’ future disciples heard that Jesus was fromNazareth, he snidely remarked “Can anything good come from Nazareth?” Yes this is where Jesus spent a quiet childhood learning the trade of carpentry from His stepfather Joseph and being obedient to him and Mary. It was here His four half-brothers and several half-sisters were born and raised with him also. Jesus was well-liked in the community, but no one ever expected Him to cure lepers or pull lame men to their feet, as we shall see later.

Olive press in Nazareth

For that matter the upper region of Israel called Galilee was not a very prestigious place either. It supported mostly agriculture and fishing at the Sea of Galilee (today called Kinneret). You would think that God would choose Jerusalem with its center of Jewish culture and great Yeshivas (Jewish schools) or maybe Caesarea, the beautiful Roman capitol on the sea coast with its stately palaces, administrative centers, and huge amphitheater. No, Jesus and His disciples were from Galilee, an area looked down upon by the afore mentioned cities as being country bumpkins, hicks, and hayseeds. An equivalent comparison today would be the way a New Yorker would look at a pig farmer from Mississippi with a southern twang in his voice, coveralls, and a straw hat.

Yet this enraged Jesus’ enemies all the more every time they got into an argument with Him and He invariably cleaned their clocks and exposed their self-righteous hypocrisy before the amazed crowds; they were being shellacked by a country bumpkin whom they couldn’t touch. And when Jesus came back and preached at His home town at the Nazareth Synagogue, His former neighbors were amazed; “Where did this man get this wisdom and these miraculous powers?” they asked. “Isn’t this the carpenter’s son? Isn’t his mother’s name Mary, and aren’t his brothers James, Joseph, Simon and Judas? Aren’t all his sisters with us? Where then did this man get all these things?” And they took offense at him. But Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honor except in his own town and in his own home.” And he did not do many miracles there because of their lack of faith. (Matthew 13:53-58)

In an argument the religious scribes and Pharisees were having with one of their members who was a supporter of Jesus, they snarled at him “Are you from Galilee also? Look into it, and you will find that a prophet does not come out of Galilee.” In this they were mistaken and did not know their own scriptures, for seven hundred years earlier the prophet Isaiah wrote; “The land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali [northern Israel], by way of the sea, beyond the Jordan, in Galilee of the Gentiles… The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who dwelt in the land of the shadow of death, upon them a light has shined.” (Isaiah 9 1-2)

Hannah the weaver in Nazareth

Joseph and Mary were basically a couple of nobodies from the middle of nowhere, and most of Jesus’ disciples were nobodies, common fishermen and tradesman who God just picked to prove He can use anybody. How it enraged the religious leaders when after Jesus’ resurrection these same nobody country hic disciples were lifting lame men to their feet and cleaning their clocks in arguments just like Jesus did. I too was once a poor carpenter and I took great comfort that my Lord once lived a simple life and could relate to the problems and troubles I go through. It also gives me hope that God can also use me just like he used these other nobodies that simply made themselves available to Him.
